Medicare Plan Choices for individuals turning 65
- You just have a 7 month period in which to subscribe to Part B. This is called your “Initial Enrollment Period” (IEP). You can enroll 3 months before, and up to 3 months after your 65th birth month. If you wait until after your 65th birthday to register for Plan B, your coverage will be delayed by 1 month. For example, if you turn 65 years old in January, and you wait until February to register for the Part B plan, your coverage will begin on the First of April.. Find your neighborhood Social Security Administration Office to enroll (you must show up in person).
- Should you miss signing up for Medicare Part B during your 7 month window, you may be penalized 10% for every 12-month span that you do not have Part B. You’ll pay an added 10% of the Part B premium, if you have waited a year after your 65th birthday to register. If your premium for the Part B coverage is $100 a month, you will have to pay a total of $110 a month, every month.
- The Part B enrollment period starts on the first of January and ends March 31st, should you miss this Enrollment period, you may have to wait until the following year.
- You’re not covered by Part B until July 1st, if you have enrolled for Part B during this time..
- You won’t start paying for Part B until your Part B effective month.
- Should you choose to enroll as soon as you are able, your coverage will begin on the month of your 65th birthday. However, if your birthday is the 1st of the month, your coverage will start one month earlier..
- You will have up to 3 months after your Part B effective date to register for a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan or Medicare Advantage Plan..
- Within half a year of your Part B coverage effective date, you must enroll to get a Medicare Supplement Plan, otherwise your application will go through medical underwriting and your medical coverage will not be considered a “Guaranteed Issue”
Retiring or Losing Existing Coverage?
- You just have 63 days after you lose credible coverage by which to register for Part B. In case you miss this period, the aforementioned fees & deadlines apply..
- Unfortunately COBRA coverage is not considered credible.
- If your workplace is giving you insurance coverage for a set period of time ( let us say 1 year of severance), you’re not required to register for Medicare Part B because you have credible coverage, BUT, you have to subscribe to Part B no later than 8 months after you cease working, regardless if you still have credible coverage from your job..
- You can have double coverage, and Medicare would be considered the “first payer”. This is usually allowed for people with VA Benefits, or Union insurance coverage. In the event you give up your Union coverage (terminate it to get onto Medicare), you might not be able to get it back.
Relocating From Another County or State?
You simply have 63 days after you “officially” relocate to be able to change your plan, or register into Medicare part B. This time frame is recognized as a “Guaranteed Issue” span so you can’t be refused coverage. After you have told the Social Security Administration about your move, the 63 days starts..
