For Individuals about to turn 65
- You have a period of seven months, called the “Initial Enrollment Period” to sign up for Part B. Individuals have up to three months prior to their 65th birthday and three months after their birthday to register.. Should you wait until after your 65th birthday to register for Plan B, your coverage will be pushed back by 1 month. For example, if you turn 65 years old in January, and you wait until February to enroll for your own Part B plan, your coverage will begin on April 1st.. Individuals must visit the Social Security Administration Office in person to enroll for the Part B Plan.
- Should you miss enrolling for your Medicare Part B Plan during the Initial Enrollment Period, you may be penalized 10% for every year that passes. Once you enroll in Part B, you will owe 10% of the present Part B premium. If your premium for your Part B coverage is $100 each month, you’ll pay a total of $110 a month, every month.
- The Part B enrollment period begins on the first of January and ends March 31st, should you miss this Enrollment period, you’ll need to wait until the next year.
- You aren’t covered by Part B until July 1st, for those who have registered for Part B during this time..
- Your coverage begins on your Part B effective month, and you won’t need to pay for your coverage until this date.
- If your birthday is on the 1st of the month, your coverage begins on the first of the month prior to your birthday, otherwise your coverage begins on your 65th birth month.
- Medicare Advantage and Medicare Prescription Drug Plans should be enrolled for within the initial three months of your Part B coverage.
- You have up to 6 months after your Part B effective date to sign up for a Medicare Supplement Plan as a “Guaranteed Issue”. Outside of this window, you’re permitted to sign up, but your application would go through medical underwriting and there’s a possibility you can be refused coverage.
Losing Present Coverage or Are You Retiring?
- Should you miss the accessible 63 day period to register for Part B, you’ll need to handle the deadlines and fees listed above.
- Coverage supplied by COBRA is just not adequate.
- You need to register for Part B coverage within the first eight months which you quit working, even though your workplace has provided insurance coverage from a severance plan or similar package.
- Union insurance or coverage given by your VA benefits can provide you with double medical coverage. In such circumstances, Medicare is considered to be the “first payer”
Moving to a New State or County :
You only have 63 days after you “officially” move to be able to switch your plan, or enrol into Medicare part B. This time frame is considered a “Guaranteed Issue” interval this means that you cannot be denied coverage. After you have told the Social Security Administration about your move, the 63 days begins..
