San Marcos Broker – Agents – Medicare Made Easy

Complimentary Medicare insurance consultations from Just Us Insurance for individuals who are new to Medicare or who are turning 65 years old.

Have you recently turned 65?

  • You only have a 7-month window available to sign up for Part B. This is called your “Initial Enrollment Period” (IEP). The timeframe to enroll for Part B is 3 months before or after your 65th birth month. If you opt to sign up after your 65th birthday, your coverage won’t go into effect until the subsequent month. An example is: Should you turn 65 in January, and you wait until February to join Part B, your Part B effective date will be April 1st. You’ll not have Part B coverage until the 1st of April.. Individuals must go to their local Social Security Administration Office in person to sign up for the Part B Plan.
  • If you miss registering for your Medicare Part B Plan during the Initial Enrollment Period, you will be penalized 10% for every year that passes. You’ll pay an additional 10% of the Part B premium if you have waited a year after your 65th birthday to sign up. If your premium for your Part B coverage is $100 each month, you will pay a total of $110 a month, every month.
  • The Part B enrollment period commences on the first of January and ends March 31st, in case you miss this enrollment period, you’ll have to wait until the next year.
  • You’re not covered by Part B until July 1st if you have enrolled for Part B during this time period..
  • You won’t begin paying for Part B until your Part B effective month.
  • The first month this can go into effect is your 65th birth month, unless your birthday falls on the 1st of the month, in which case, your effective date will begin the 1st day of the month before your birth month.
  • Medicare Advantage and Medicare Prescription Drug Plans must be enrolled for within the very first three months of your Part B coverage.
  • Within six months of your Part B coverage effective date, you have to register to get a Medicare Supplement Plan, otherwise, your application will go through medical underwriting and your medical coverage will never be considered a “Guaranteed Issue”

Losing Present Coverage or Are You Retiring?

  • You just have 63 days when you lose credible coverage by which to sign up for Part B. In case you miss this period, the above-mentioned fees & deadlines apply.
  • COBRA isn’t considered credible coverage
  • The coverage given by your company, from a severance package of a similar situation, is considered credible coverage and you won’t have to enroll for Part B. It’s a requirement that you register for Part B within 8 months from the date you stop working, regardless of your current coverage status.
  • Union coverage or coverage supplied by your VA benefits can supply you with dual medical coverage. In these circumstances, Medicare is considered to be the “first payer”

Are You Relocating to A Different State or Moving From Another County?

After you officially move in, you have 63 days to register for your Medicare Part B plan. This time frame is considered a “Guaranteed Issue” interval so you can’t be denied coverage. These 63 days start after you have talked about your move to the Social Security Administration.
